A multi-lumen catheter is used to simultaneously perform multiple functions through a single insertion point, such as infusing fluids, drawing blood samples, or monitoring central venous pressure. 'Multi-lumen' refers to a tube or catheter that contains multiple internal channels (lumens) within a single outer wall. Each lumen is an independent passageway. In manufacturing, precise air pressure must be maintained in each lumen during extrusion to achieve the correct internal geometry, outside diameter, and wall thickness.

A double lumen catheter has two independent channels, typically used for dialysis or simultaneous infusion and blood withdrawal. A triple lumen catheter has three channels, allowing three separate functions at once, such as fluid infusion, medication delivery, and pressure monitoring. Triple lumen catheters are more common in intensive care settings requiring multiple concurrent therapies.
